Meio Portuguese Fort 1681

Practically nothing remains of what was once the most extensive defensive system in Goa. Built by the Portuguese in the 17th century, it comprised not one but three forts. These were in turn linked to a fourth at Colvalle. The main fortification area consisted of the Assumpcao, Meio, and Novo forts in what was in effect the frontier between Portuguese and Hindu territory. In spite of the vast fortifications, the Mahratas were able to penetrate the defenses and capture the Assumpcao and Meio forts.
